The simple word…“Gilpin” always gets me excited. I look forward to staying here so much. This little gem in the beautiful English Lake District has the power to recharge anyone’s batteries. Such wonderfully relaxed luxury at its best.
The lush yet homely décor, log fires and friendly staff is just the start.
On my early arrival, (I just wanted to get there) my room wasn’t quite ready. I was treated to afternoon tea in the cosy lounge whilst sipping a glass of fizz, don’t mind if I do on a Thursday lunch time. As it was winter time, the afternoon tea was also fuelled with warm alcoholic drinks, mince pies and more cake than we knew what to do with. We managed.
One of the brand new Gilpin spa lodges was my room for the night and it was well worth waiting for. These chic suites, with floor to ceiling glass and unique décor, are a must stay for many people wanting a special weekend in the Lakes. Surrounded by manicured gardens and water features, the tranquil setting is perfect for relaxing with a book in your own little sanctuary. They have thought of everything when building these spa lodges, from mood lighting, Nespresso machines, sauna, steam room, huge oval stone baths for two, and remote control blinds – you even get a remote for the fire. No need to leave your room really.
The journey around our own private spa suite started with a treatment for two in front of the stylish fire, which are placed in each suite. The therapists turned up at the door with a little wicker basket of goodies, including moisturiser, scrubs, body masks, face spritz and more. They then spent the next hour massaging us into a state where work was no longer on our minds. We then spent a fun few hours in our private steam room and outdoor sauna, finishing in the hydrotherapy pool with another glass of fizz. It is nice to have some uninterrupted relaxation time together with no kids and no emails. Bliss.
Getting ready for dinner was a challenge. I was so relaxed and could quite easily have retired for an early night, however, we didn’t and I am really glad. We dined in the restaurant, which has such a lovely relaxed atmosphere. A country house without whispered conversation and staff that feel comfortable calling me Zoe, rather than my married title, is such a welcome thing.
Hrishikesh has added something special to Gilpin’s food. It has always been award winning, however, it is now at its best. With artistic flair and fabulous flavours, I am sure more awards are on their way. I enjoy tasting and talking about wine and we had matching wines with each course, which added to the whole experience. I would highly recommend the Tasting of Cumbrian Lamb washed down with a glass of Rioja. I am afraid to say that we were last to bed as usual, maybe relishing each moment before our trip back to work the following morning.
Thank you Gilpin, I can’t wait to come back again.
