Out and About

The North Coast is made up of miles of beaches, pine forests, salt marshes and mud flats, much of which are Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. No wonder Norfolk is such an inspiration for writers and artists. The gently rolling landscape lays claim to colourful seaside villages, quaint cottages and charming little craft shops, so if you don’t want to do anything too demanding, there is lots to explore.

Dating back to 1096, Norwich Cathedral is one of Norfolk’s most impressive architectural creations. Its Romanesque building has the tallest Norman tower in England, and within its walls 1,000 years’ worth of history can be uncovered. Or you can learn about the incredible history of Great Yarmouth at the Time and Tide Museum, which tells of the town’s maritime heritage and vibrant past.

A great way to explore the scenery of Nofolk is by steam train on the North Norfolk Railway, where you can journey among 10 miles’ of idyllic countryside. Alternatively, visit Blickling Estate, an imposing red brick mansion surrounded by extensive gardens. Castle Acre Priory is another historic site where you can delve further into Norfolk’s fascinating past.

Owing to the renowned Norfolk Broads and the extensive coastline, sailing and boating are popular activities all year round. Whether you’d like to hire a steam cruiser for the day and explore at your own leisure, or board a guided tour boat, you will find something to suit you. There are also canoes and rowing boats available if you want to get more hands on and discover the local wildlife close up.
