5 Reasons to Visit Scotland in 2014

It seems that Scotland is the place to be in 2014 but if you are in any doubt as to why, I have compiled a list of reasons why we think you should head for this illustrious country. We have found plenty of things to do and places to stay when you visit Scotland in 2014, so all you have to do is hit the high road.
Hogmanay
This Scottish celebration takes place on the last day of the year, to most of us it’s New Year’s Eve. Hogmanay is associated with Scotland’s ancient heritage and there are many traditions such as singing Auld Lang Syne as the clock strikes midnight and wishing “Guid New Year” to friends and strangers. Although the night is celebrated across the country, there is nowhere quite as spectacular as the Edinburgh Hogmanay Street Party and the fireworks over the castle.

Commonwealth Games
Another momentous occasion for Scotland in 2014 is the Commonwealth Games, which will be held at 14 various venues in the City of Glasgow, including the Athletes’ Village, Celtic Park, Ibrox Stadium and Hampden Park.

Ballater Highland Games
Highland Games have been held here since 1864 and are a long running tradition in Scotland. There are many events taking place during the day and you can watch different competitions, which include heavy field events, dancing, piping and racing.

Ryder Cup
In 2014, for the first time in over 40 years, Scotland will play host to the prestigious golfing event, the Ryder Cup. It will take place at the world famous Gleneagles Golf Resort in Perthshire. Originally between the USA and Great Britain, the Ryder Cup began in 1927 but now also includes teams from Europe.

Homecoming
Throughout 2014 the Scotts will be celebrating Homecoming events, which are taking part across the country. From Celtic pageants and sporting events, to arts festivals and cultural shows with ceilidhs, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
