This 18th century stone barn wrapped inside the dramatic Howgill Fells has been restored to the nth degree to create the most beautiful country escape.
The Malabar in Cumbria has all the usual features of rustic chic design but with so much more. Lofty ceilings with chunky beams, stone flooring and exposed stone walls provide a natural backdrop for its unique and original touches that make it stand out from the crowd. The owners have brought so much love and fascinating curios to the interior, you will instantly fall in love with the place.
This luxury B&B is a refreshing gem tucked away among the breathtaking scenery of Cumbria, on the edge of Sedbergh, where patchwork fields are separated by dry stone walls, typical of the Yorkshire Dales.
What makes this boutique B&B even more special is its sociable atmosphere and communal dining, giving the guests chance to share stories and laughs over a hearty Cumbrian breakfast.
The owners ensure all guests feel right at home here, and living in the farmhouse next door means they are very much at the heart of your stay. Their time spent in India is apparent from the wonderful selection of teas and curiosities that are dotted throughout.
Just a short drive from the ancient market town, The Malabar in Sedbergh is the perfect base for exploring the winding streets and quaint shops. Alternatively, the area is ideal for walking, cycling and visiting interesting sites such as castles and Roman forts.
The rooms at The Malabar are possibly the finest you will ever witness in a bed and breakfast in Cumbria. As well as being extra spacious, they feature rustic chic furnishings, Herdwick wool carpets and the most impressive views.

Food and Drink
Breakfasts at The Malabar are the main event and are made by the owners for all guests to enjoy around a large communal table. Indulge on homemade bread, cereals and Cumbrian full breakfast at your leisure.
Guests can enjoy complimentary afternoon tea on arrival, which includes a wide selection of loose leaf tea, pastries and cake.
The Malabar doesn’t serve dinner, however, the owners can recommend lots of places close by to eat.

During October 2017, guests can attend a 4 day yoga experience with a professional teacher from India.

Experience barefoot walking in the valleys of the Dales with Alison O’Neill, The Shepherdess or brave a wild outdoor water swim.

Rooms
Named after an Irish farm where Fiona’s father once lived, Millmont has a French style double bed and is the cosiest room at The Malabar. It is perfectly formed and full of character.
With unspoilt views of Winder Fell, Kundaly is named after a tea planters club in Kerala and brings the outdoors in. Tranquil and luxurious, this room has a gorgeous Corbeille double bed and chaise longue.
Being the most spacious of the double rooms, Camellia has a superking size bed and is filled with light from the glass door that leads onto a private terrace. The room takes its name from an evergreen shrub used to produce tea.
Overlooking the garden, Tregenna is a striking room with William Morris prints and red and gold accent colours, and has been name after the Tregenna Castle Hotel, where Fiona’s father worked as General Manager in Cornwall.
Nuzzled into the top floor, Earlston is roomy and light with views of the River Lune. The suite has a romantic ambience, blending orange, pale blues and soft pink furnishings. The imposing Excelsior bath sits under the eaves and offers a tranquil place for washing away your stresses.
Enter this suite from your own private door on the ground floor. Vast windows draw in the light and look out onto Garths Farm yard. Grand furniture sourced from Rajasthan and China adds an international feel to the suite. The bathroom is simply stunning with the Farrow and Ball Radicchio red bath and walk in shower.
