Towering above the city of St Brides Bay and the Preseli Hills, Roch Castle in Pembrokeshire, South West Wales, was once home to courtesans and conquerors and dates back to the 12th century. Perched on a rocky tor on the fringes of Roch, the castle is just a short drive from the coast.
In stark contrast to its ancient exterior, the interior of the castle has been immaculately restored and given a contemporary designer makeover. Mullioned windows, arched doorways and stone, spiral staircases blend with fresh white walls and charcoal grey furnishings. This is one sleek place, and the glass-fronted Sun Room simply adds to its wow factor.
No expense has been spared in the bedrooms. Minimalist in design, the rooms don’t require too much fuss as the views take all the glory. Philippe Starck strikes again with his cool design in the bathrooms. Each room has a different layout but all with their own quirks.
Breakfast is included at Roch Castle with fresh fruit, pastries and hot dishes to choose from. If you want to book dinner during your stay, you can take a complimentary transfer to Twr y Felin, the sister hotel, St Davids. The Blas Restaurant has 2 AA Rosettes for its seasonal menu.
This Norman keep is full of surprises and not what you’d expect from most luxury guest accommodation. The glass-walled Sun Room is the best place to appreciate the sweeping panoramas in all their unadulterated glory.
Cosy pockets with sofas that tempt you to pause for a while are tucked among more roomy lounges, where you’ll come across abstract art hanging from the walls.
Food and Drink
Breakfast is complimentary, and bowls of fresh fruit salad, straight-from-the-oven pastries and other hot dishes are served at Roch Castle. Guests wanting evening dinner will be transferred to the restaurant at the sister hotel, Twr y Felin. The menu at the 2 AA rosetted Blas Restaurant takes its inspiration from the local Welsh produce and the seasons.
