Dating back to 1912 when it was first built as a country retreat, The Salutation Hotel and Restaurant in Sandwich is now one of the finest luxury hotels in Kent. It lies in the centre of Sandwich, a pretty town lined with medieval architecture that lies on the River Stour.
The Grade I Listed building of the hotel takes pride of place inside the most verdant, award winning gardens that are reminiscent of a child’s storybook, with enchanting nooks and crannies that make up a series of ‘rooms’ designed by Sir Edward Lutyens.
Not only notable for its magnificent gardens, The Salutation has a somewhat esteemed reputation for fine dining. The restaurant is a contemporary yet elegant space comprising three dining areas and is filled with light from the floor-to-ceiling windows that look out onto the gardens. Guests can dine on local, seasonal dishes from the a la carte menu and Tasting menu. Throughout the day, small plates and afternoon tea are served.
The Tasting Room overlooks the state of the art kitchen, where guests can watch the chefs at work and immerse themselves in the sights and sounds. There is also an informal Drawing Room, for guests to use at their leisure, and two large terraces, overlooking the award-wjnning gardens and the perfect place to take Afternoon Tea.
Bedrooms at The Salutation are divided into 3 wonderful buildings, each demonstrating the unique elegance that is evident throughout the hotel. Antique furniture, sash windows and ornate mirrors mingle with hand carved beds and lavish bathrooms, where you may find a roll top bath, duet sinks or walk in shower.
The whole ethos of the hotel, from the striking building and gardens, to the beautiful interiors, conjures up images of a quintessential country house, but without the stuffiness. This is a place where children can explore and create magical memories, and dogs are equally welcome to stay in The Coach House and Gardener’s Cottage.
If you’re not unwinding in the hotel, you can explore a wealth of places close by. From the ancient town of Sandwich and its local markets, to cliff top walks and quaint seaside towns, you will undoubtedly fall in love with Kent.
