Overlooking the estuary and sea in the pretty sailing village of Fowey in Cornwall, Fowey Hall Hotel is an impressive Victorian building that enjoys a hilltop position, surrounded by five acres of gardens. Famous for being the inspiration for Toad Hall in ‘The Wind in the Willows’, this is a magical place offering luxury family friendly breaks. With excellent food, exquisite spa facilities, family friendly accommodation and a strong focus on children, it has all the ingredients of the perfect holiday.
Originally built in 1899 by a local gentleman who emigrated to Canada as a young man and returned a very wealthy one with a Canadian heiress of a wife in tow, Fowey Hall began life as a symbol of Charles Hanson’s wealth. As a listed building, it is an excellent example of the finest materials and craftsmanship available in the late 1900s. Nowadays, the hotel is the perfect fusion of old and new, featuring rooms that embrace the past with their design yet are blended with modern touches that bring Fowey Hall into the 21st century.
As a well known family hotel, the accommodation is flexible and ideal for people with babies or children. There are suites and interconnecting rooms available, many with estuary views, ensuring that mums and dads can have a little privacy and children can enjoy their own space. Of the 36 rooms and suites in Fowey Hall, 11 are family suites and there are 5 sets of interconnecting rooms, whilst many of the family rooms include sofa beds or z beds for flexibility. All of the rooms include a TV, DVD player and complimentary WiFi to keep younger guests occupied while mum and dad relax.
In the grounds, there is a children’s play area with a trampoline, slides and swings – and the entire 5 acres of gardens is ideal for exploration and adventures. The 12 metre swimming pool has dedicated family times and plenty of pool toys to enjoy, and there is also a croquet lawn. An Ofsted registered creche can care for babies and children up to the age of 8 during the day, whilst older children can play in the Blue Room, and for the evening, babysitting and baby listening can be arranged. Grown up time is important too, and the spa boasts a delightful range of luxury treatments in three treatment rooms designed to pamper and refresh you. There is also an outdoor hot tub on a contemporary decked area with sun loungers overlooking the sea.
Dining is a relaxing and pleasurable experience at Fowey Hall thanks to the family friendliness of the hotel. Children have their own menu, and highchairs are provided. A dedicated high tea time is scheduled between 5 and 6 pm so families can sit together whilst children eat and mums and dads enjoy a drink – or you can eat together in special family dining time from 6pm onwards. A sophisticated oak panelled dining room is the setting for the grown up evening meal – savour the delights of local Cornish produce, selected for freshness and seasonality, and presented with style and flair. The growers and suppliers are named so you can appreciate the provenance of the food you are eating.
Fowey and the surrounding area is a lovely place to spend time in and is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. As a busy harbour town, there are plenty of shops, galleries containing local works, cafes serving cream teas and ice cream shops to explore, or you can stroll down the Esplanade and admire the scenery. During your stay at Fowey Hall Hotel, there are opportunities for you to enjoy watersports such as sailing, canoeing or kayaking, or you can spend family time on the beach at Readymoney Cove.
