A Weekend Escape at Houndgate Townhouse

I was looking forward to my stay at this boutique, Grade II listed townhouse, conveniently located in the heart of Darlington. Vibrant with a cosy, home from home atmosphere, this is a place where I immediately felt welcome.

The hotel has a unique charm with its distinguished brick frontage and the restored Georgian interiors that meet in a head on collision with contemporary boutique design.

Upon arrival the familiar fabric head of a moose greeted us in the reception area, a mere introduction to the unusual yet stylish design that is evident throughout the hotel. From the succinct quotes that attract your gaze to the walls, to the intriguing artwork, Houndgate really is a visual delight that fuses an air of wit with aesthetically pleasing design. A lesser known gem in the North East, this little place is a true breath of fresh air.

I was pleasantly surprised by the size of our room, as it’s only a small hotel with just eight rooms I was expecting something much more compact but it was extremely spacious, with sash windows and Farrow and Ball painted walls and wood panelling. Thoughtful touches such as the luxury toiletries, HD wall mounted television, and robe and slippers made our stay here even more enjoyable.

After quickly settling in, we moseyed on down to the bar to sample one of the cocktails I had been hearing so much about, and they certainly didn’t disappoint. The lively colour scheme is refreshingly satisfying with various shades of green bedecking the Hound Bar and Lounge, and Eleven restaurant. The bar is seriously cool and has a laid back atmosphere. We could have very easily overdone it with the cocktails, however, we resisted and decided to explore the local area instead.

Within just half an hour of the hotel there are plenty of places that are well worth a visit. Whether you want to discover the dramatic scenery of the Yorkshire Dales or wander around castles and museums, it is within easy reach of many attractions. Being so central to the town and with good transport links right on the doorstep, Houndgate Townhouse is perfect for a quick getaway.

After a wonderful night's sleep in the extra comfy bed, we devoured several items from the breakfast menu, which certainly lived up to the hotel’s reputation for culinary excellence. The Eggs Florentine was cooked to perfection and, dare I say it, possibly the best I have had.

Houndgate Townhouse has most definitely put Darlington on the map, and when I am in the North East again, there is no doubt I will be staying here.
