The Chester Vase has been producing future winners since 1907. As only 3 year old colts and geldings can take part, this race is a crucial test of stamina as the Derby or the St Leger at Doncaster loom on the horizon.
Many famous horses have passed through this rite of passage, but none so famous as Shergar. In 1981, he dazzled Chester’s racegoers with his 12-length victory and his subsequent 10-length victory at the Derby remains the largest post-war winning margin.
Chester Racecourse is steeped in history. The Roodee, (the piece of land on which the racecourse is situated) has been traced back to at least the Roman times, and archaeologists sponsored by the Race Company are still unearthing fascinating discoveries.
The first recorded horse race on the Roodee took place on February 9 1539, and was deliberately introduced to replace the violent game of football…and so the tradition of horse racing began!
Echo Falls Ladies Day at Chester Races is a fab excuse to dress up! The dress code is suit jacket, collar and tie for the gents and smart dress for the ladies. Although hats are by no means compulsory, more and more women wear them each year.
